Our Mission
Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) works to build widespread citizen understanding
and advocacy for policies and actions designed to manage and protect our natural resources
and public health. CCE carries out this mission through public education, research, lobbying,
organizing and public outreach. To achieve our mission, CCE focuses efforts in four main
program areas: Water Protection, Public Health and Toxic Chemical Contamination, Open
Space and Wildlife Habitat, and Climate Change and Energy Policy.
About Us
Established in 1985 by a small group of concerned citizens, CCE’s founders recognized the
need to increase public involvement in determining environmental policy. As an independent
member-supported, not-for-profit, non-partisan organization, CCE built its reputation on
representing the public, key stakeholders and utilizing sound science to advance meaningful
environmental stewardship and public health protection.
Providing Leadership
Over the last 23 years, CCE has grown into a multi-state, grassroots organization supported
by over 80,000 members. Working from six regional offices, CCE conducts environmental
protection programs on issues of local, regional, and national importance. Since Federal and
State policies provide a framework that many local governments operate within, CCE believes
maintaining a strong presence at all levels of policy making is essential to achieve lasting results.
CCE advances environmental policies and actions based on a philosophy of prevention,
conservation, and environmental stewardship.
Achieving Results
CCE’s leadership in protecting the natural environment is evidenced by an agenda focused
on enacting solutions to environmental and public health problems. CCE works with the public
and policy makers to solve existing environmental problems while simultaneously identifying
and advocating for preventative measures, based on sound facts and research, to restore and
safeguard threatened natural resources.
